Abu Dhabi, Jan. 27, 2020—The Emirates Policy Center (EPC) continued its remarkable march of success and achievements in 2019, to become one of the key think tanks, not in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region only, but also in the Middle East and the world. EPC has made excellent achievements in 2019; it has made tangible progress in the number of events, publications and papers produced. The center has expanded its research units to cover new geopolitical regions, as well as its network of freelance researchers and partnerships with counterparts all over the world. In 2019, EPC has launched its new website and an academy for training in the policy field.
EPC President, Dr. Ebtesam Al-Ketbi, said the center makes new achievements every year, expands its list of partners and those interested in the center’s outcomes and activities.
“The center has become one of the key think tanks in the region and occupies a renowned position on the map of think tanks in the world,” Dr. Al-Ketbi added.
She pointed out that EPC’s achievements were culminated by ranking 7th in the Middle East and North Africa region in the annual global think tank index report 2019 released by the University of Pennsylvania.
The center has also ranked 10th in the top best think tank conference worldwide, EPC President said.
Dr. Al-Ketbi said that this global recognition of EPC’s status and role is a testimony that the center has become part of the UAE’s soft power, and contributes to the enhancement of the country’s image, which is founded on achieving development based on scientific research, knowledge and innovation.
EPC President said that her aspiration has been for the center to be a trailblazer, fill the vacuum in the country and the region represented by the lack of genuine think tanks that provide decision makers in the country with comprehensive and in-depth analytics for events and developments, draw their attention to interactive shifts, guide them to challenges and future trends, and provide them with recommendations that improve the outcomes of domestic and foreign policies.
Papers and publications
To fulfill its endeavor in supporting decision makers, EPC has produced more than 500 papers in 2019. These papers have focused on understanding and analyzing the ongoing regional and global political shifts, and building scenarios for interacting regional conflicts. Since it was established, the center has prepared more than 2,400 papers that included policy papers, position papers and strategic analysis.
In 2019, EPC has also issued 7 publications in Arabic and English, a total of 55 publications since it was established in 2013.
Conferences and symposia
Like every year, EPC has held its major annual gathering, Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate that is considered now as one of the significant dialogue platforms on regional and global security issues. Last year’s gathering was distinguished by the issues it raised as it was held under the title of “Old Power’s Competition in the New Age”. It was also distinguished by the intellect and academic significance of - both male and female - scholars and experts who participated in the event with a total number of more than 400.
EPC has also held three symposia in 2019: Shifts in Iraq’s Political Landscape and its Foreign Policy Interactions in light of the U.S- Iran Conflict; Shifting Dynamics in Turkey's Internal and Foreign Policy; and Yemen’s Southern Cause.
As part of the center’s strategy in diversifying its partnerships, EPC signed new MoUs with several prestigious regional and global think tanks, including Munich Security Conference; Institute of South Asian Studies, National University Of Singapore; Center for International Strategic Studies in Islamabad; The Antall József Knowledge Centre (AJKC) in Budapest; Center for Strategic Studies - University of Jordan, and Egyptian Center for Thought and Strategic Studies. The purpose of these partnership agreements is to exchange knowledge and expertise in the research field with these think tanks with the aim of enriching mutual research efforts and improving their outcomes.
EPC’s new website and Training Academy
As part of its development plan, EPC has launched its new website as a platform that can provide decision-makers, researchers, and interested experts with an in-depth analysis of issues of concern and unfolding developments in line with research methodologies and standards followed in the center.
EPC has also launched the first training academy of its kind in the region that provides training courses in the fields of policy analysis, building and analyzing strategies for decision makers, analyzing strategic data, modeling of potential scenarios. It also hold courses in designing religious, educational and media policies.
Finally, Dr. Ebtesam pointed out that despite the big achievements EPC has made in 2019, the center still has bigger and more ambitious goals and plans in the future. She is confident that the center’s agenda will be achieved by the constant support of the country’s senior leaderships, notably H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, H.H Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
