Why did the Egyptian President Sever Ties with Syria?

This analysis reviews reasons behind the sudden decision by President Morsi to sever ties with Syria and motivations behind this decision, such as the desire to align with Islamists, court the Salafists and divert attention away from June 30th. In addition, the decision embodied a contradiction between rejecting the military intervention in Syria and the call for imposing a no-fly zone over the country. The analysis points out that it is likely that this decision did not take into consideration Egypt’s national interests, or was taken without consulting the armed forces or the national security agencies.
