The United Arab Emirates represents an ideal case to study of a small state’s effective response to strategic challenges and contemporary shifts in the Middle East. Regional and international geopolitical developments in the region since the dawn of the twenty-first century have forced radical changes in UAE foreign policy and power-building.
Coinciding with the country's golden jubilee in 2021, this book seeks to review, interpret and predict the path of UAE foreign policy by discussing key issues and topics including the country’s power-building efforts; the impact of volatile geopolitics on its foreign policy; the “burden-sharing” strategy with the United States; the UAE’s perception of the sources of regional threats; its increasingly diverse regional and international partnerships; and the internal factors that have shaped the Emirati model over the five decades since the founding of the federation on December 2, 1971.
