The Sectarian Discourse and Demonizing Opponents

EPC | 01 Jun 2013

The assessment analyzes reasons behind the rising divisive religious and sectarian discourse, in face of political opponents in Egypt during May and June 2013, the danger of using this kind of ethnic divisions due to its vertical nature, its relation to identity and the use of violence and force, and its possible outcome of demonizing opponents and the desire to eliminate them. The assessment concludes that this might weaken national unity among Egyptians, as well as lead to more violations against Copts, a decline in the concept of citizenship and the absence of the civil state model among a large segment of Egyptians.
