Hassan Rouhani wins Iranian Presidential Elections - Significance and Characteristics of the Next Stage

The paper concluded that the ruling coalition of the “House of the Leader”-the Revolutionary Guard Corps has succeeded in engineering the recent presidential elections in Iran by achieving a large turnout of 72.7% and the rise of the candidate of the “minimum level” of political weight and ambitions by 50.7%. The coalition saw Rouhani’s victory in elections as a chance to put house in order, end internal attrition, attend to the critical external issues and foil foreign attempts to destabilize homeland security by provoking national sentiments. Abroad, the coalition will try to rebuild Iran’s soft power and try to reach a settlement for the nuclear issue and relations with the US by capitalizing on the mandate given to Rouhani, but within the lines drawn by the coalition.
